Why is running out of gas bad for my car?

A Vehicles Fuel System

  • Newer vehicles have finely tuned systems that work together to deliver fuel into the engine.
  • In the system, there is the fuel pump, which is located inside the fuel tank and it works to pumps fuel to the secondary fuel injection system.
  • A fuel filter is used to remove any particles from the gas prior to entering the injection system and prevent clogging the system.
  • The fuel injection system controls injection of the gas into the engine.
  • This system sends fuel through small fuel lines to an injection port with a tiny hole which controls sending fine mists of gas to the engine.

What happens to these systems when you run out of gas?

1.    Clogged Fuel Injection System

  • Dust particles and water from the air get into a car's gas tanks and settle to the bottom of the tank, which over time accumulate forming a sludge on the bottom of the tank.
  • Running your car to empty will result in this sludge being sucked up by the fuel pump and then into the fuel injection system.
  • When you are running out of gas air and gas fumes are sucked into the fuel pump, which can push the sediment through the gas filter and into the injection system.
  • The small fuel lines in the injection system and the injection ports can easily become clogged by the sludge slowing or preventing fuel from passing into the engine all together.
  • The car may be fine at first, but it may suddenly stop running because the engine cannot receive fuel from the injection system.
  • This requires the system to be flushed to clear the muck out and it is not a quick or cheap fix.
  • The fuel injection system of a car should last for about 100,000 miles.
  • Leaving a injection system clogged, hoping it will unclog itself is a bad idea, and it often results in the  injection system becoming impossible to clear, and it will have to be replace at an even higher cost.

2.     Broken Fuel Pump

  • A vehicle's fuel pump which is mechanical device and it has parts that are in motion while it runs pumping fuel to the injection system.
  • As a fuel pump is running, its parts are in continual motion, which generates heat increasing the temperature of the pump.
  • For newer vehicles with the fuel pump is  located in the gas tank, and it is the gas in the fuel tanks, surrounding the fuel pump, that serves to keep the pump cool while running.
  • When a car's fuel pump, runs without gas in the tank to cool it, its parts begin to heat up, increasing in temperature, which causes these parts to break off the pump.
  • These broken parts fall into the gas tank and can be sucked up by the pump and into the injection system clogging the fuel injection system. (see section one regarding clogged fuel injection system)
  • As the fuel pump's mechanical parts are broken off of it, it stops working properly and will need to be replaced.
  • Frequently driving a car with less than an 1/8 of a tank of gas or until on empty can result in the fuel pump not being cooled properly, parts heating up and breaking off the pump, and ultimately requiring the fuel pump to be replaced.
  • Running out of gas even just a single time can heat the fuel pump up enough to damage the pump causing it to malfunction and require its replacement.
  • It is the fuel pump's location that makes this a repair that typically is not cheap, as it requires dropping the fuel tank.

3.    Best Way to Avoid Damaging a Car's Fuel System

  • Avoid unnecessary repair costs, is to fill up whenever your tank reaches a quarter tank.
  • Consider 1/8 of a tank as needing gas immediately!
  • You'll safe money on gas by doing this cars get better gas mileage with a full take of gas compare to even the mileage with even a half tank of gas.
  • Considering the price of gas now is over $5.00 a gallon, the saving will be noticeable.
  • Plus you will avoid the costly repairs resulting from running out of gas or driving until you are almost out of gas repeatedly.
Hope this helps you save money, prevent costly repair, and get better gas mileage. Happy Driving! And Remember if you need a Tow or Roadside Assistance in Santa Rosa or the surrounding cities, Towing Santa Rosa is open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week even on holidays.
